‘Fashion for Good’ has designs on local wardrobes

A group of Cobham mums has kicked off a novel fundraising initiative with the launch this week of ‘Fashion for Good’, a creative two day fundraising event which will offer local people the opportunity to support key local charities by simply recycling their fashionable clothes.
Elmbridge residents are being encouraged to donate something special from their wardrobes to help the Fashion for Good team raise funds to help the community. Although Elmbridge has again been voted the most ideal place to live in the UK, there are many sections of the local area which are disadvantaged and ‘Hidden Surrey’, an influential report by the Community Foundation for Surrey, has shown that there are pockets of real need in even the most affluent of boroughs. In Esher and Cobham alone we have some hidden poverty recorded as the worst in the country as it is so disguised b y the local wealth.
Organiser and ‘Fashion for Good’ founder Kat Vitou explains, “I started Cobhammums.com in Nov 2009 to help mums new to the area and have quickly realised that we can do more to support families locally. A group of us have come together to use our professional skills to launch the ‘Fashion for Good’ event. We are asking every local resident to search through their wardrobe and find something that will help us raise funds for charities which are close to our hearts and homes. Whether it’s a vintage bag, belt or designer shoes or clothes that you no longer need, your donation will not only make a difference, but is a fantastic way to recycle for a good cause. “
Key donated items will form part of a glamorous designer and vintage catwalk show restyled by top London stylists. The exclusive fundraising event, which will take place following London Fashion Week on 30th Sept, will be compered b y eminent stylist and TV fashion guru, Nick Ede who stars on GMTV and has recently been a judge on Sky One’s ‘Project Catwalk’ with Kelly Osbourne.
The catwalk event will be followed the next day by ‘The Sale’ the following day where the remainder of the designer items will be sold for a fraction of their original value, enabling local fashion- savvy residents to snap up a bargain whilst supporting good causes. We will make the clothes look very cool AGAIN!!
All proceeds from the Fashion for Good events will go to two local charities – the Community Foundation’s ‘Hidden Surrey Fund’ which supports disadvantage within the local community, and Your Sanctuary, a refuge for Domestic Abuse victims in Woking. Wendy Varcoe, Executive Director of the Community Foundation, says, “We have been hugely impressed with the enthusiasm, skills and energy of the Fashion for Good team a nd are delighted that they are establishing a Fund with us to support local families in need. We hope that local residents will support this fun initiative by checking through their wardrobes; their donations will make a big difference to those we are hoping to support.”
